This means the 130 000 foreign sea crew who typically travel to Australia annually on commercial ships such as cargo and cruise ships and other non-military ships now need to apply for a visa before they arrive. A non-military ship means the ship is used for trading or commercial purposes or owned by non-Australian company for scientific research or vessel approved by Australian Department of Foreign Affairs as for public vessel status. Family members are not permitted to work in Australia on a Maritime Crew visa.
