The German Australian Community From the 1850s German settlers escaping the rising nationalist sentiment in Germany began arriving in the Australian colonies looking to start a new life. The attached settlement map shows the extent of the massive German influx into southern Queensland in the mid-late 1800s and until the First World War when German immigration.
