Many came because of religious persecution at home or because of a thirst for exploration or a desire for economic improvement. In April 1849 the Beulah was the first ship to bring assisted German vinedresser families to New South Wales. Most of the early German immigrants were extremely poor and therefore migration to South Australia was an improvement in both economic and religious matters.

Many of those on board were political refugees. They established a thriving settlement north of Melbourne in what was later to become the suburb of Thomastown. The Commonwealth Government paid most of their fare to get to Australia. The reason for their immigration from Germany was what they saw as interference by the ruler of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm III in their religious affairs.
